The Final Curtain! Fade to Black...

Tonight, the graduating class of 2024 will celebrate their media and technology education by viewing four collectively created films. Some will laugh, others may cry, and many will marvel at how far they have come. Eventually, all will call this film their “legacy movie.” This final gift to the Seattle Girls’ School (SGS) community will be their “final curtain call” or culmination. We hope they will return to watch this legacy movie in the years to come.

This tradition, passed down year after year, has created many legendary tales. Our development team has begun inviting alumni back to watch their middle school antics in films spanning tragedy, drama, comedy, and mystery. Today, during a special community meeting, we held our annual all-school Honors Assembly and watched the movies they spent an entire semester creating, a project they’ve prepared for since 6th grade through Performance and Media Arts (PMA) classes.

They took on roles such as Producers, Directors, Budget Managers, Logistics Managers, Equipment Managers, Props & Costume Managers, Screenwriters, Video Editors, Cinematographers, Peer Mediators, Continuity Managers, PR & Communications Managers, Poster Artists, and performers. They formed a full-fledged team, motivating and cheering each other on, overcoming challenges, and working towards the common goal of creating a film that would excite the community. Every day in class resembled a film production office, filled with the mess and creativity of problem-solving.

Some began as 5th Graders, creating superheroes, sheroes, and queeroes for their ComiCon Culmination. Others started in 6th Grade as Science Fiction characters for their Avatar Multimedia Projects, building worlds, writing scripts, and acting out improv scenes. In 7th grade, new students learned audio engineering basics, recorded parody songs, and made music videos with DSLR cameras for the first time. Others joined this year, bringing humor, skills, and a willingness to become part of a tight-knit community through the “Filmmaking Bootcamp” winter intensives. Whether they started this year or in 5th grade, they united in their collective efforts. This year, they learned consensus decision-making, genre selection, plot drafting, screenwriting, acting, directing, producing, editing, and marketing.

Lights, Camera, Action… And then fade to black… The credits will roll soon as Graduation approaches. May they continue to pursue their passions with determination and pride. Their culmination builds on all those that came before, and their final product shines as brightly as they do when the lights dim and their film appears on the screen. Fade to black, that’s a wrap!
