SGS Mock Trial

Every year, our 7th-grade students dive into a two-week “Law School” intensive, where they immerse themselves in the trial process—analyzing evidence, developing case theories, and collaborating on prosecution or defense teams. The experience culminates in presenting their cases before a real judge and a jury of parent volunteers.

This year’s mock trial was unlike any other. For the first time in SGS history, the case ended in a double hung jury! Both teams—the prosecution and defense—presented such compelling arguments that neither jury could reach a unanimous verdict. Emelio, our 7th and 8th-grade language arts teacher, described the historic moment:

“This year’s mock trial was the first double hung jury in SGS history. Kudos to both the defense and prosecution for scoring points in their respective juries.”

This incredible outcome reflects the depth of learning, preparation, and teamwork our students put into this program. Wendy Ewbank, our social/global studies teacher, wrote an insightful piece about how this intensive gives students first-hand experience with the justice system. You can read it HERE.

Of course, none of this would be possible without the incredible support of our SGS community. Every year, families, judges, high school students, and alumni come together to make the mock trial a success. This year, alumni went above and beyond, some even volunteered to serve on the jury!

A heartfelt thank you to everyone who made this year’s mock trial such a memorable and meaningful event for our students and families.
