7th and 8th Grade Spanish: An Update!

Libby (Profe) Rowan
Students in 7th and 8th grade Spanish have been hard at work! A critical skill each grade has been working on is something called “circumlocution.” In a language learning context, circumlocution can be used to describe a word by talking around it. One of my favorite examples of this was when a student asked (in Spanish), how to say “night bird.” For someone who doesn’t teach a language, this might sound like an absurd question, however, after adding the word “black,” it was apparent that the student was trying to say the word “bat.” Generally, students are in the habit of drawing or gesturing to express words they don’t know, however, circumlocution is a strategy that extends beyond the classroom and builds their vocabulary so that if they are in a situation where they have to speak Spanish, but don’t know a word, they can still communicate.

In 7th grade Spanish, students have been learning to talk about daily routines, what classes they take, and how to express what time they do certain activities. This unit culminated in a mini project where students described the daily routines of themselves and others. During their simulation, students talked about how people spend time during a perfect day. Next, students will learn more about how to talk about clothes as well as explore some traditional dress from the Spanish-speaking world.

In 8th grade Spanish, students are learning to describe symptoms of illness, give recommendations for treatment, and use appropriate vocabulary for a visit to the doctor. 8th grade students also read articles intended for native Spanish speakers about traditional remedies for illness including chamomile, mint, and dandelion teas. Soon, students will learn how to talk about popular sports and express what is happening at the present time with the present progressive.
