On Monday night, the school was buzzing with excited energy to finally celebrate all the hard work and time 6th graders put in during winter term. Students spent the last three months in medical school, developing their performance, speaking, and presentation skills, moving through the writing-editing cycle with authentic identity based poetry, and creating unique self portraits.
As students gathered in the green room, families, friends, and mentors began exploring the ‘Museum of Me’ Each student displayed items such as their avatar mask, self portraits, autobiography, research cards, and any other artifacts of their choosing.
As showtime grew near, 6th grade students were reminded that this night was to celebrate them, that the community was there to hold them up and shine a light on all their amazing-ness. They also shared and repeated affirmations: “We can do hard things!” and “I am ready for this!” and lastly participated in the SGS tradition of a ‘Yes’ circle. Take a powerful stance, reach to the sky, make a fist and grab tightly onto the energy of night, and together pull your arm down and into your body, and shout “YES!” for as long and as loudly as you can.
From that moment on, students wow’d the audience with their in-depth knowledge of their studied medical conditions and brought the audience through a range of emotions with their powerful, authentic poetry.
Thank you to everyone who attended and showed support to these amazing students. Thank you to the doctors who spent their night with us. Thank you to the adults at home for all the practice time spent. Thank you to the teachers and SGS adults who guided students through this project. It was a community effort and event. We hope to see you at the next one!
