A Photo is Worth 1,000 Words….

At SGS, 7th graders have been working on photography in Term 1 and audio engineering in Term 2 to prepare themselves for creating music videos in Term 3 as part of Performance & Media Arts (PMA). These units help them build the foundational knowledge needed for the production of 8th-grade short films and the movie culmination in PMA next year.

During their photography unit, 7th graders learned how to use DSLR cameras, including understanding their parts and settings. They then practiced framing, focusing, and zooming techniques through multiple assignments, while also learning the crucial skill of storing and archiving media data.

In their audio engineering unit, students explored the role of voices in old-time commercials and created radio plays. They learned how to use Zoom recorders, microphones, XLR cords, and other equipment. Using their voices, they reframed commercials with clarity, power, and authority—aligning with the 7th-grade theme of “VOICE!” As the unit wraps up, students will put on their reporter hats and create political podcasts. Throughout this process, they will develop interview skills, learn how to create foley effects, select background music, write scripts, and, most importantly, take on the role of hosts for their very own shows.

With their lessons in audio and photography techniques and equipment, students will be ready to master the art of music videos in Term 3—laying down their voices on tracks, matching sound to imagery, and applying their knowledge from Social Studies’ Bill of Rights lessons.
